Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

In mastopexy, the breasts are raised, the nipples are repositioned, and the areolas may be reduced in size. Mastopexy can be performed at any age, but plastic surgeons usually recommend waiting until breast development has stopped. Pregnancy and breast feeding may affect the size and shape of your breasts, so you may wish to postpone surgery until after having children. The milk ducts and nipples typically are not affected during this procedure, so a breast lift should not alter your ability to breast feed.

There are different degrees of breast sag or ptosis. Minor ptosis is illustrated by b, moderate by c, and severe by d. Please note this is determined by the position of your nipple in relations to the breast crease. Example is pseudo-ptosis, this means the nipple is in the correct position but the lower breast tissue has sagged.

Any of the following feelings or conditions may indicate that you are a good candidate for mastopexy:

  • weight loss has changed the size and shape of your breasts
  • after pregnancy, your breasts have become smaller and have lost their firmness or substance
  • nipples and areolas point downward, especially if they are positioned below the breast crease
  • you feel self-conscious wearing a swim suit or form-fitting top.
