What Is A Breast Lift (Mastopexy)?

It’s not unusual for women to go through body changes, especially after having children, aging, or losing weight. This includes losing firmness in the breasts, resulting in them starting to sag. Such changes can sometimes leave a woman feeling low in self-confidence, unable to wear the clothes she once wore, and have a negative self-image.

Luckily, a range of breast lift (mastopexy) options are available to address such changes, which is why more women are considering breast lift services more now than ever. In fact, in statistics published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast lift uptake has increased by 92% over the last 16 years with 101,264 US women undergoing the procedure last year. The surgery tightens the skin and lifts the breasts for a firmer appearance.

As a specialist plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Mazaheri has performed thousands of procedures with over 20 years of experience. He offers breast lift surgery on an individual basis or combined with other procedures.

About the Procedure

Dr. Mazaheri has been specially trained in breast lifting procedures, whether you are in need of a traditional breast lift or you are looking for a lift + implant.

Breast lift, or mastopexy, surgery raises and firms the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour. A breast lift can rejuvenate your figure with a breast profile that is more youthful and uplifted.

The results of your breast lift surgery are immediately visible. Over time, post-surgical swelling will resolve and incision lines will fade.  Satisfaction with your new image should continue to grow as you recover from surgery. The final results of your breast lift will appear over the next few months as breast shape and position continue to settle. Incision lines are permanent but will continue to fade over time. The results of your breast lift surgery will be long lasting.

Are You a Candidate for a Breast Lift?

You may be a good candidate for this procedure if you meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • You have been pregnant or have been breastfeeding
  • You have had large weight fluctuations
  • Your skin has lost elasticity due to aging
  • Your areolas have become enlarged over time
  • Heredity body issues
  • Your skin has lost its elasticity or your areolas have enlarged
  • You’re feeling bothered by the feeling of sagginess in your breasts and want to change both their position and appearance
  • Your nipples and areolas point downwards
  • One breast sags lower than the other
  • Your breasts are flatter and have become more elongated in shape

Breast Lift (Mastopexy) Patients

It’s very important to understand all aspects of your breast lift procedure. It’s natural to feel some anxiety, whether it’s excitement for your anticipated new look or a bit of preoperative stress.

Be sure to ask questions. During your breast lift consultation, Dr. Mazaheri will discuss your surgical goals and discuss your options.

Will I have to get breast implants during a breast lift procedure?

The answer is NO. The only people that need to get implants are those who wish to have bigger breasts. Those who are satisfied with their current breast size but wish to have “perkier” breasts will only need to undergo a lift procedure.

Will I have to have that “anchor” scar on my breast after a mastopexy?

The answer is NO. During your consultation I will examine your breasts and determine which lift procedure is best for your particular breast anatomy. There are four different breast lift procedures that I can perform based on the degree of your breast sagginess.

Will I lose all my nipple sensation after a lift procedure?

You may notice a slight decrease in nipple sensation initially but should return back to your baseline within a few months. Most of the nerves are preserved during the procedure because the nipple areolar complex is kept attached to your underlying breast tissue.

What’s involved with a breast lift procedure?

A breast lift is also known as a mastopexy. It’s carried out by making an appropriate incision to remove and tighten the skin. This lifts the breasts up, reducing how much they sag while reshaping and contouring the breasts. It can also provide you with a more youthful and uplifted appearance.

What are the different types of breast lifts?

There are different grades of breast ptosis which determine how much the breasts ‘sag’. This differs from one person to the next. The most severe is Grade 3, which is when the nipple points to the ground. This may occur after losing a significant amount of weight or after multiple pregnancies.

Depending on the degree of breast ptosis, there are four different types of mastopexy your surgeon can perform.

Crescent lift – The smallest type of mastopexy, a crescent shaped piece of skin is removed from the top of the nipple-areolar complex.

Benelli/Donut lift – A ‘donut’ shaped piece of skin is taken from around the nipple-areolar complex.

Vertical/Lollipop lift – This type of mastopexy will leave a scar around the nipple-areolar complex and vertically down the breast to the crease.

Wise/Anchor lift – A scar is left around the nipple-areolar complex, vertical down the breast, and horizontal at the base of the breast along the crease.

The more breasts sag, the more skin needs to be removed, thus leaving a longer scar. During your consultation, your surgeon will examine your breasts and recommend the best procedure for your breast anatomy.

Rest assured, your nipple sensation should return to normal as the nerves are preserved during the procedure by keeping the nipple-areolar complex attached to underlying breast tissue.

Combining your breast lift with a breast augmentation.

Depending on your goals, breast augmentation may also be an option to have alongside your breast lift. This is often the case if a woman has lost breast volume after pregnancy, for example. The procedure involves inserting implants into the breast to give a larger, fuller appearance.  If you’re happy with your breast size, but wish for a ‘perkier’ appearance, a breast lift is more suited to your needs.

What if I also want a mommy makeover?

Post-pregnancy and childbirth, a woman will go through several body changes. This has led to some opting for a full ‘mommy makeover’. This combines a breast lift with other procedures such as breast augmentation, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), and liposuction. It’s a great way to get back your self-confidence while restoring your pre-baby body.

What is the cost of a breast lift procedure?

The cost of the procedure is completely dependent on what’s required for the breast lift and whether you combine it with other procedures such as an augmentation. While your surgeon will always recommend the best course of action, your personal goals must be put at the heart of your decision.

Results & aftercare

Breast lift surgery results are immediately visible, but these will only improve over time as the incisions heal and the swelling subsides. You’ll be given plenty of support and advice on how to recover, maintain your new look, and care for your surgery sites. As breast shape and position settle over the next few months, your satisfaction with the results should only grow.
